Employees
receive AREA awards for job well done
AREA (Accountability, Respect, Excellence Applause) awards
were given to employees who have gone above and beyond their job description
and have demonstrated actions exemplary to the mission, visions and values
of the Medical Center and Medical University.
Employees received a $50 gift certificate to either Citadel or
Northwoods mall. The AREA award recipients are:

Vernell Threat, Public Safety. Threat helped a patient stranded
in Rutledge Tower with no transportation home. Threat called for a taxi,
but discovered the patient had no money. Threat helped pay for the cab
ride home with his own money.

Kathy Brown, Accounts Payable: Brown goes out of her way to find
and copy checks. She is an asset to Accounts Payable.

Roger Jennings, Public Safety: Jennings changed a tire for two young
women. The tire went flat in the middle of Calhoun Street at the height
of rush hour. He risked his own personal safety.

Ashley Foster, Public Safety: Foster inspected and repaired a tire
for an employee.

Peter Kobes, College of Dental Medicine: Since September 1998, Kobes
has donated platelets through the American Red Cross Platelet Center at
MUSC 24 times. each donation takes approximately two hours and helps improve
platelet transfusions for cancer and leukemia patients.

Eddie Polk, Physical Plant: Polk found a fork lift to come and remove
equipment from a semi-truck. Polk stopped what he was doing to assist the
removal when the truck driver announced that it was MUSC's problem to unload
the item, not his.

Stephen Giallombardo, Public Safety: On Dec. 4, 1998, Giallombardo
was patrolling 18 Bee Street when he spotted a suspect’s feet through an
open window. Due to his quick reaction the suspect was apprehended and
arrested as he attempted to leave the building.

Herbert Lafayette, Parking Management: Lafayette was very kind and
helpful in going out of his way to a visitor who was in distress with a
dental emergency.

Mary Anne Smith, Enrollment Services: Smith answered calls from
students who needed help finding their final grades and registration appointment
times on the web site. Her patience and diplomacy are outstanding and exceptionally
noteworthy.

Bill Stillway, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology: Stillway volunteers
his time to teach between 50 -100 MUSC students, staff and faculty dance
lessons Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Harper Student Center.

Lora Fields, Nuclear Medicine: Fields went out of her way to help
transport a study patient to an outpatient appointment.
