Program acquaints students with biomedical researchSixty-one undergraduate students from colleges in South Carolina and around the country concluded their Summer Undergraduate Research Program with research presentations Aug. 11 and 12.The program, which introduces students to biomedical research and acquaints them with educational opportunities at MUSC, is geared primarily to rising juniors and seniors, although some promising rising sophomores completed the program this year. “The program introduces students to the world of basic biomedical research with hands-on experiences they may not have encountered at this point in their studies,” said Debbie Van Pelt-Gaskins, College of Graduate studies student services program coordinator. “We hope the experience will induce them to apply for admission once they graduate.” Of the 664 students who have participated in the program since its inception in 1980, 70 have enrolled at MUSC. Twelve students participated the first year of the program, and the number has grown to more than 60 participating during the last two. Students apply from throughout the United States.
