SGA president welcomes students to MUSCby Alexander C. WhitleyMUSC Student Government Association On behalf of the MUSC Student Government Association (SGA), it is my pleasure to welcome you to MUSC. I am sure you are looking forward to spending endless nights studying and countless hours listening to some of the most thrilling lectures that you will ever experience, but don’t be fooled by all the undergrad rumors. You will still have time to enjoy the great city of Charleston, and all of the activities the SGA offers. The SGA is devoted to enhancing your student life while at MUSC, just as the faculty and administration will spend hours enhancing your educational experience. And yes, you will need a little—let’s not kid ourselves—a lot of rest and relaxation, and part of the SGA’s mission is to provide just that, from cultural experiences at the St. Luke’s Concert Series to just plain fun at Happy Hours, Oktoberfest, the Halloween Horror Cruise, the Oyster Roast, winetastings, and Edisto canoe trips, to the largest event of the year, the Alhambra celebration at Stoney Field. We also provide an extensive six-sport intramural program enjoyed by all. In addition to all these activities, SGA provides both a forum as well as a unified voice that works closely with the administration to address student concerns. The SGA is a 45-member body encompassing elected representatives from all six colleges on campus. I encourage each of you to take an active role in guiding your MUSC experience by participating in the SGA or by contributing ideas via your SGA class representative or by e-mail, sga@musc.edu. I must say these are exciting times at MUSC, with the construction of the new hospital, renovations to the library, and changes within the student parking system. Please do not sit idly by and let decisions be made without your input. I assure you there is enough time in your individual schedules to become involved in SGA. As your SGA president, I look forward to hearing your suggestions and making your voices heard at the university level. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004
