Nurses
seek gold standard in patient care
When choosing a hospital for your family’s care or a place to work, Magnet
Designated Hospitals are the gold standard in patient care.
MUSC Medical Center is pursuing Magnet Designation through the American
Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
What is a “Magnet Hospital”?
“Magnet Hospital” is a prestigious designation for hospitals that provide
the best in nursing care and exemplify the highest standards in professional
nursing practice.
Magnet designated hospitals attract and retain quality employees from
nursing and all professions who choose to partner with nurses in implementing
the best practices in patient care and nursing system operations. Magnet
hospital clinicians exceed the standards of improving the quality and outcomes
for the patient by operationalizing the “Forces of Magnetism.” Those forces
are quality of nursing leadership; organizational structure; management
style; personnel policies and programs; professional models of care; quality
of care; quality improvement; consultation and resources; autonomy; community
and hospital; nurses as teachers; image of nursing; interdisciplinary relationships;
and professional development.
Magnet hospital patient outcomes demonstrate decreased mortality, failure
to rescue rates, shock and cardiac arrest, pulmonary compromise after major
surgery, urinary tract infections, nosocomial infections, central line
infections, patient falls, medication administration errors, unplanned
hospital readmissions, length of stay, and pressure ulcers.
