Library
adds AccessMedicine to its resources
by Laura Cousineau and Marcia Reinhardt
MUSC Library
AccessMedicine, a collection of electronic textbooks published by McGraw-Hill,
was added to the MUSC Library’s growing collection of full-text resources.
Updated daily, this collection includes 23 well-respected titles. AccessMedicine
augments the information found in the printed versions of these textbooks
with reviews, editorials, medical news and frequently updated content.
This resource provides for self-paced learning, exam preparation, and includes
self-assessment and recertification tools.
AccessMedicine provides immediate, effective answers for daily clinical
practice, as well as resources for rounds, presentations, and medical news
updates. Additionally, resources outlining the basic science underpinnings
of clinical care are available.
Some of the resources available in AccessMedicine are:
-
Hurst’s the Hearth, 11th ed. This comprehensive, current resource on the
heart includes anatomy and physiology as well as disease treatment. Its
focus is patient care with materials authored by experts in the field.
ACC/AHA guidelines are included, as are color images of the normal and
diseased heart. “Hurst’s Updates” provides concise reviews, editorials
and general updates.
-
Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment (CMDT). Designed for use
in every day clinical practice, it covers more than 1,000 common diseases
and disorders with brief, detailed synopses. An “Essentials of Diagnosis”
precedes each disease entity and summarizes key points. This version includes
practice guidelines in disease screening, prevention and management, and
appendices listing standards and screening instruments. CMDT is updated
quarterly.
-
Scriver’s Genetics, also called the Metabolic and Molecular Bases of Inherited
Disease (MMBID). Reviewers describe MMBID as the undisputed authority on
genetic inheritance. It outlines the molecular and metabolic underpinnings
of diseases as well as describing the specific syndromes caused by mutation.
The pathogenesis of various disorders is outlined as well as therapeutic
options. The work in enhanced by full color figures and 3D representations,
a list of acronyms, an inherited disease message board, and links to related
Web sites. MMBID also includes a link to Clinical Pharmacology, an
online drug resource that includes around 2,600 independent, peer-reviewed
monographs covering more than 95,000 drug products.
-
Harrison’s Online, including Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine,
16th ed. Harrison’s was described as the “bible” of internal medicine.
In addition to the text describing more than 4,700 diseases, it includes
full color diagrams and clinical photographs, grand rounds presentation
and a self-assessment feature.
An additional 17 textbooks divided between the basic and clinical
sciences round out AccessMedicine. The clinical materials include Lange’s
“Current Diagnosis and Treatment” series, covering several specialties.
The basic science materials cover such topics as histology, pathology,
pharmacology and neuroanatomy. (see sidebar)
Aspecial feature, My AccessMedicine, allows the creation of personal
bookmarks, downloading to a PDA [Windows only], and e-mailing items of
interest to colleagues. AccessMedicine offers searching for a topic
across all textbooks and an A-Z index of terms and concepts.
AccessMedicine is available from the MUSC Library home page at http://www.library.musc.edu,
from the E-Books, other databases or MUSC Library catalog sections.
To use Access Medicine, you must be connected to the MUSC Network. To
