Mannequin designed to teach workplace safetyRecently, Occupational Safety and Health’s Cheryl Brian and Margaret Robertson of MUSC’s Bloodbourne Pathogen Subcommittee of the Environment of Care Committee spent a few minutes introducing Quality Management’s Mary Allen to Protecta P. Diva. Diva, an educational mannequin, is designed to introduce and teach employees about workplace safety practices, especially those relating to the exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials.Cheryl Brian, Margaret Robertson, and Mary Allen set up Protecta P. Diva. A learning tool, Ms. Diva will be displayed in the Medical Center cafeteria lobby until mid-February. Each year, MUSC Occupational Safety and Health requires managers to conduct a hazard determination report for each of their departments and share information with their employees. The committee’s goal is to reduce the number of exposures in the workplace, especially mucocutaneous (affecting the eyes, nose and mouth) exposures. Employees can do this by wearing a personal protective equipment mask, eye protection and other designated equipment. In 1999, MUSC reported 52 such exposures in the workplace. In the years following, the number has steadily decreased to 30 exposures in 2004. The committee would like to continue this trend and is actively seeking ways to improve proper safety techniques and practices throughout the MUSC community. Bloodborne Pathogen Subcommittee
