College of Nursing students donate to Respite Care MinistriesEach year the College of Nursing student body organizes countless efforts in order to raise money for a worthy cause. This year, after doing clinical rotations with Respite Care Ministries, the students voted and decided to donate to this worthy cause. From left are Laura Stefanelli, CON students Julia Breeden Moore, Gayden Tyler, and Wendy Schmunk, and Adult Respite Care executive director Carla Green. Respite Care Ministries, a local non-profit organization that has operated for eight years, offers a half-day supervised program of music, arts and crafts, conversation, gardening, exercise and lunch for those suffering from memory impairment due to stroke, Alzheimer’s, or other related disorders. This gives families and caregivers a chance to run errands, meet with friends, or simply rest at home, without having to worry about the care of their loved one. The participants are also involved in community service projects. Recently, the participants helped the American Red Cross and Goodwill Industries by cutting out crosses for the victims of the tsunami disaster. The program is run completely through donations and small participant fees and has four locations throughout the Charleston area, including downtown, Mount Pleasant, and Johns Island. Each location is staffed by two full-time caregivers, and volunteers. “Upon spending time with the participants of this program, and seeing how it affects them and their families, my classmates and I felt a strong desire to give back to Respite Care Ministries,“ said Gayden Tyler, 2004 secretary for the College of Nursing Student Government Association. “The staff and volunteers will continue to have the resources to reach out to these individuals and their families.” For information in helping Respite Care Ministries through a donation,
volunteering, or in learning more, call Carla Greene, executive director,
