Medical student presented $5,000 private scholarshipby Cindy AbolePublic Relations It was Kelli Burroughs' childhood dream to help others by becoming a doctor. Now in her final semester, the fourth-year medical student and Camden native is poised to realize that dream, thanks to some extra help from a hometown scholarship and the memory of a lady who believed in the success of other young South Carolinians. Drs. Jerry Reves, right, and Jeffrey Wong present Kelli Burroughs with her $5,000 award. Burroughs became the latest recipient of the Louise Mickle Harvey Scholarship on behalf of the Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden. The $5,000 award was presented to Burroughs on Jan. 14 by Jerry Reves, M.D., dean of the College of Medicine and Jeffrey Wong, M.D., associate dean for medical education. “I’m overwhelmed and excited to be nominated for this award,” said Burroughs, who just completed a family practice rotation training with Alice Brooks, M.D., in her hometown. “It is through the generosity of many people that makes this possible. Thank you.” The scholarship is available to a female South Carolina resident who expresses interest in studying medicine or veterinary medicine. Candidates must possess good academic standing and show financial need. “We’re happy that Kelli met the criteria for this scholarship and that the church could offer her this assistance as she completes her studies in medicine,” said Don Pullum, chairperson of the scholarship fund, Bethesda Presbyterian Church. “We only wish it could be more.” “Kelli’s scholarship was extra-ordinarily well deserved,” said Reves.
