Total body workout program slated for Saturday, Feb. 5

Universal Physicality (UP) will host its first workshop, “Building a Foundation for Movement” from 12:30 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 5 at MUSC's Wellness Center.

UP is an innovative approach to exercise and movement therapy designed to work the core muscles of the body.

The program pivots on principles of isometrics, oppositional movement, breathing, and relaxation to create a total body workout.

Developed by Marka Danielle Rodgers, UP is meant to increase maximum movement potential in people of all abilities and ages.

The workshop is scheduled to include a lecture on the history and concepts behind UP, one-on-one consultations with trained instructors, and two one -hour exercise sessions, dealing with the different aspects of UP.

Rodgers has more than 35 years of professional dance experience combined with the study of body physics and movement.

For the past four years, she taught no-impact exercise at MUSC. UP was developed through her many years of training and as a result of personal struggle and triumph.

Ten years ago Rodgers suffered a spinal cord injury that was expected to leave her a quadriplegic. Doctors predicted she would not recover from the severe neurological damage incurred from her injury.

When regular physical therapy failed, she developed her own approach to restore her body. Rodgers incorporated her professional dance training, flexibility techniques, and body mechanics into a successful exercise program. Today she is not only walking, but the former professional ballerina is dancing and inspiring others to move with her.
