Magnet Bound: better tools, better
results
by

Public
Relations
The Magnet Steering Committee hosted the year’s last Magnet champion
quarterly assembly Oct. 3 and provided Magnet champions with tools to
become better champions, information about the upcoming “Supporting a
Culture of Excellence” fair in November, and discussion and techniques
for better communication.
Supporting
a Culture of Excellence
The fair will take place in the horseshoe Nov. 17 with a poster day for
nurses and an essay presentation highlighting MUSC examples of
excellence around campus.
Posters may be submitted by teams or individuals from all units and
should highlight one or more of the 14 Forces of Magnetism.
Participants are asked to RSVP so they may receive a poster board to
complete their project.
A Tips and Techniques workshop is being offered Oct. 26 to assist staff
with development of their posters and get materials and advice on the
best ways to present examples of excellence. For more information or
RSVP, e-mail thalkt@musc.edu.
Institute of
Psychiatry Magnet champions discuss tools that would help their units
as Linda Lewis, IOP Admissions and Adult Services director, writes down
ideas.
The Magnet Steering Committee is also sponsoring an essay contest on
the topic, “Achieving and Demonstrating Excellence at MUSC: Magnetizing
MUSC.” Everyone in the MUSC Community is invited to submit an essay.
The essay should tell about a program, project, or experience that
helped move MUSC from a good organization to a great one. It should be
between 250 and 500 words, or about half a page, single-spaced.
Participants are encouraged to incorporate personal, heartfelt
experiences and spelling and grammar will be edited prior to judging.
Deadline for submissions is Oct. 31. Submit essays to Heather Woolwine
by campus mail (Public Relations, P.O. Box 250341) or e-mail
woolwinh@musc.edu.
The winner will be invited to read his or her story in the horseshoe on
the day of the fair, but may elect for a representative to read the
story on his/her behalf. Prizes will be awarded for both the poster day
and essay contest.
Magnet
Champion Role Interviews and Helpful Tools
Cindy Hough, R.N., Nurse Alliance chair, and Pam Smith, R.N., Nurse
Alliance chair-elect, asked champions to volunteer for a research study
that will analyze the role of Magnet champions and record champions’
thoughts, suggestions, praise and criticism. For more information or to
schedule an interview, contact Hough or Smith.
Champions were provided information about the Bridges Mentoring program
for new nursing graduates and a citywide orientation for all student
nurses. Communication techniques SBAR and Super User Validator (SUV)
disseminate important information about new skills, education, or
training opportunities, but also changes in policy and magnet
information.
During break-out sessions, members from clinical units gathered and
discussed numerous tools provided by the magnet steering committee in
addition to devising some new ones of their own.
For information on useful tools or techniques to increase morale and
performance on units, as well as disseminate information, e-mail
thalkt@musc.edu.
