LYNX users need to clean up I: drive
by
George Spain

Technical Publisher
LYNX users: We are running out of space on the “I: drive” (the common
file storage computer) and if we don’t do something soon, the system
may stop working entirely. We intend to transition to a 500Mb quota for
each user, similar to the limits currently on Home-room.
We ask you to take action now to remove from your “I: drive” such files
as .mp3, .mov, .wmv, .gif, .jpg, .tif , weather maps, satellite images,
etc., unless they are directly business related.
Not only will you help keep the system from failing, but you will also
comply with the Computer Use Policy, which forbids incidental personal
use when it jeopardizes business use of shared computer resources.
Furthermore, some files may be copyrighted and storing them on a
company computer without the permission of the copyright holder may
lead to legal action against MUSC, and personnel action against you.
We scanned individual directories to see what kind of files are
stored there (we did not look at the data in the files, only at the
file types). More than 800 LYNX users exceed the soon-to-be-implemented
500Mb limit.
Information Services is working with departments with a heavy need for
graphics and photo files (e.g., Pathology and Radiology), to help them
make a smooth transition to quotas.
If you are a business manager and could use such help, please contact
the OCIO-IS Enterprise Storage Services at ocio-is-storage@musc.edu.
On Nov. 7, the 500Mb quota will go into effect. After that time, you
will receive a series of messages reminding you that you either 1)
exceed the 500Mb quota or 2) are within 80 percent of that quota. The
reminder messages will continue until 1) you delete enough files to get
back under quota, or 2) you apply for an increased quota at http://www.musc.edu/infoservices/lynx/quota_request.html,
outlining your need for additional space.
If by Jan. 23, 2006, you have not resolved your over quota status, you
will no longer be able to store items on the “I: drive” and some
programs that save files to your “I: drive” will not work.
There are more than 8,800 LYNX users on campus. Storage space on shared
drives is at a premium. Please go through your files carefully
and backup personal files to a CD or a private hard drive then remove
the originals from the “I: drive.”
