MHA student advances to final round
in national competition
During The National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE)
20th Annual Educational Conference and Tenth Annual Everett V. Fox
Student Case Competition in Detroit, Mich., Tony Coleman, second year
College of Health Professions health administration student, was the
only single-member team in the history of the competition to advance to
the final round.
“A year ago when I started this program, I knew very little about the
administration of health care. The fact that MUSC advanced to the
finals in this competition alongside schools that are well-known and
highly ranked in their health administration programs is a testament to
the commitment of all the professors in my department,” Coleman said.
“It felt very good to have my work and ideas advance to the finals.”
The competition is designed to give first and second year Health
Administration graduate students an educational experience to enhance
their problem analysis and presentation skills. Each team was charged
with applying their creativity, knowledge, and experience while
assuming the role of Trinity Health System’s St. Joseph Mercy Oakland
Hospital Office of Planning and Analysis. The teams were required to
analyze current issues facing the hospital’s Community Benefit
Ministry, and provide recommendations during a 20-minute PowerPoint
presentation followed by a 10-minute question and answer period.
The top six of 20 team scores advanced to the final round with the top
three final round presentation scores earning first, second or third
place.
Coleman has a bachelor’s degree in education from Southern Illinois
University and was recently named as one of two 2005-2006 College of
Health Professions Public Advisory Board Scholars for academic
achievement and outstanding leadership skills. As an active duty member
of the armed forces, Coleman is a full time student participating in
the Navy’s Medical Service Corps Inservice Procurement Program and will
earn a commission and return to uniform upon graduation.
