Physicians encouraged to attend medical malpractice series

The MUSC Office of Graduate Medical Education and the Charleston County Medical Society will present, for the first time, representatives from the medical, insurance and legal professions as part of their medical malpractice series. 

Each session will provide an objective look at specific issues regarding physician exposure to litigation, protection and preservation assets, plus share  interdisciplinary solutions for physicians, private practice groups and institutions reflecting on the growing crisis on medical malpractice in South Carolina.

  • Asset & Practice Protection Strategies. Feb. 17,  6 - 8 p.m., The Vendue Inn.
Speaker—Richard Gershon, dean, Charleston School of Law. Gershon will speak about methods for effective use of legal agreements to limit liability and address the security of transfers of ownership and offshore accounts.

Speakers—William Murphy and Josh Silverman of The Murphy/Silverman Group, Merrill Lynch.

The pair will speak on asset protection strategies through the use of effective estate planning techniques. The program will begin with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, with the lecture lasting approximately 45 minutes. Time will be available for questions and informal discussion. Space is limited to 35 participants.
 

  • Limiting Liability through Practice Management. March 2, 6 - 8 p.m., The Vendue Inn. 
Joint Underwriters Association (JUA)—Samantha Day and Tim Ward will discuss ways in which to minimize exposure to litigation through practice assessment, and review the critical issues in malpractice insurance for the current environment.

The program will begin with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, with the lecture lasting approximately 45 minutes. Time will be available for questions and informal discussion. Space is limited to 35 participants.
 

  • Improving the Defensibility of Physician Assets & Practices. April 1, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., MUSC Storm Eye Institute.


Speakers—Gershon, Murphy and Silverman, Day, Ward; Rutledge Young of Young, Clement, Rivers & Tisdale, LLP; Presented in association with the MUSC Office of Graduate Medical Education

The program is focused on articulating a cohesive objective approach to improving the defensibility of physician practices through legal, liability, and asset management strategies, and will examine the malpractice crisis facing doctors, private practices, and medical institutions today. Lunch will be provided to those who register, and space is limited to 150 participants.

The program will last approximately one hour, with time allotted for questions and informal discussion. Space is limited.
