Lose to Win winners still winning, losing

by Cheryl Carnoske

The annual Lose to Win program came to a close but many participants are still reaping the benefits of losing.

One hundred and fifty-two people from MUSC and the surrounding community signed up for the six-week weight loss/healthy lifestyle program. Numerous prizes were awarded including Tai Chi lessons, gym passes, salsa dancing lessons and cafeteria passes. The drawings held at the end of the program also gave the participants a chance to win cash prizes.

This year’s winners were Marlena Davis, $100, and Linda Ambrose, $75, who both won the drawing for losing at least six pounds in six weeks. Dana Bostic, $100, and Amy Arnold, $75, were winners for having perfect class attendance. A free teeth whitening session was also given to Susan Kachur for filling out the final survey on Lose to Win.

Those eligible for the drawings were present at the weigh-in and weigh-out where their progress was recorded.  The average weight loss during the six-week period was 3.25 pounds.  That is roughly 11,375 calories per person. The most weight lost was 23.6 pounds.

In addition to losing weight and winning prizes, the participants gained knowledge and some healthy habits by attending the six lunchtime classes taught by the MUSC dietetic interns.  This year, the classes focused on basic nutrition, fad diets, exercise, volumetrics, tips for dining-out, and recipe modification.

Though the money and prizes these participants won may quickly fade away, the healthy lifestyle habits formed in these six weeks will hopefully carry on for a lifetime.
