Returning student parking online, not in line

by Alex Whitley
SGA President
Stand-in-line parking registration was extremely effective at costing students enormous amounts of time. It also presented many security issues with students staying overnight as well as logistical issues in managing the lines.

The online system, voted for in a referendum of the student body last fall, eliminates any waiting, minus the five to 10 minutes at a computer station.

Plan now to go to your nearest computer (home, MUSC library, Center for Academic Excellence, County Library, College of Charleston Library, etc.) and log in at one or both of these times: Tuesday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 16 at 10:30 a.m.

Students away on rotation will have the same access as on-campus students and no one will have to visit the Office of Parking Management to receive their hang tags because they will be mailed to the student’s local address of choice.

By eliminating the wait, students won’t skip class to guarantee a spot and no student has a better chance of receiving a parking space over another.

All spaces for summer 2005, fall 2005, and spring 2006 will be divided equally between the two registration periods. Parking Management is working now on maximizing the number of on-and off-campus parking spaces.

All parking spaces must be paid for during online registration by debit card, Visa, or MasterCard. While you do not need your vehicle registration, you will need the make, model, year, state and license number for the vehicle you are registering and the local address where your parking hang tag will be mailed to.

Future students can go online and obtain a parking assignment prior to starting school, thus decreasing stress on those first few days as well as preventing different colleges from obtaining temporary parking permits. Throughout the year, any student can check the availability of spaces and possibly change from their current parking location.
