College of Pharmacy government association hosts
awards banquet
The College of Pharmacy Student Government Association (COP-SGA) hosted
its annual Spring Award’s Banquet on April 16 at the Citadel Holliday
Alumni Center in Charleston. The banquet gave students an opportunity
to show faculty and staff how much their hard work and dedication to
teaching is appreciated.
“The students, faculty, and staff are always enthusiastic to gather in
an environment outside the academic setting,” said Hollie Woods,
COP-SGA treasurer. “The banquet turned out to be a huge success and
everyone seemed to have a wonderful time.”
“We’re all so busy in our day-to-day lives that we don’t always take
the time out to recognize the faculty and staff that put 110 percent
into teaching us,” said Amy Goodwin, COP-SGA vice president. “It’s our
chance to make them the stars.”
At the banquet, students from each class presented different awards to
fellow classmates, faculty and staff. Eckerd/Brooks Pharmacy sponsored
the event, with additional generous support provided by CVS/pharmacy,
Wal-Mart and several local businesses. This year’s event sold out with
300 people in attendance.
“The banquet takes months of preparation. Amy was in charge of putting
the banquet together. She got the location, the caterer, the music, the
flowers, etc,” Woods said. “My job was to secure funds. With the help
of Kelly Draganov (COP development director), we received donations
from Eckerd/Brooks Pharmacy, CVS/pharmacy, Wal-Mart, and an anonymous
donor. We also held a raffle for a quilt with cross-stitched scenes of
Charleston done by the COP students, dinners at local restaurants,
carriage tours, and hotel stays.”
Wayne Weart, Pharm.D., received the Golden Mortar and Pestle Award.
This award is given to the professor who contributed the greatest to
the students’ achievement of their goals in pharmacy education. The
Golden Mortar and Pestle Award is selected by the entire pharmacy
student body and given by the Academy of Students of Pharmacy.
Other faculty and staff awards follow: Professor of the Year for Class
of 2008—Jerry Ondo, Pharm.D.; Class of 2007—Robert Notari, Pharm.D.;
Class of 2006 —Kristi Lenz, Pharm.D.; Preceptor of the Year for Class
of 2005—Philip Hall, Pharm.D.; and SGA Student Choice Award—June
