Examples of Magnet-level status everywhere

Achieving Magnet status might seem overwhelming or even confusing at times to staff participating in achieving this great distinction. What most don’t realize is that MUSC is full of magnet level practices, attitudes, and behavior, everyday.

Below, Mira Galang, R.N., 5W Antepartum, describes a recent Magnet experience.

Tabor Culbreth, R.N., left, Dr. Sean Zyblewski, and Lauren Altman, R.N., gather with other employees for its weekly potluck feast.

“Magnet is an amazing concept because I was truly ‘magnetized’ without even knowing it. One night, I decided to walk over to labor and delivery, which is just across the double doors of 5West. I was trying to get in touch with the doctor on call for a non-urgent request for a patient before I left for the evening. I found her in the labor and delivery’s lounge and was pleasantly surprised at what I found. My heart smiled when I witnessed a true example of excellence… doctors and nurses sitting side by side around a dining table sharing a potluck feast they had gathered together. It was so nice to see doctors and nurses serving food to each other and the camaraderie that seemed to exist between the two different medical disciplines. I have since learned that they do this once a week, formerly on Fridays but now on every Wednesday. I’ve also learned that the labor and delivery nurses vote for the best resident of the year on their floor and the residents in turn vote for the best nurse of the year, with both groups providing the recipients with a reward. I’m so impressed to see such simple and easy acts as examples of an evolving culture of excellence.”
