Charleston, MUSC to host CASE meeting

In an age of increasing concerns about resistance of bacteria to antibiotics, physicians, pharmacists, and microbiologists are meeting to discuss options to prevent and control this threat to the public health.

In response to these concerns, the Carolinas Antimicrobial Stewardship Effort (CASE) was created as multidisciplinary group of infectious disease physicians, pharmacists, microbiologists, infection control practitioners, and scientists from university and community hospitals in North and South Carolina.   The meeting will be held at the Renaissance Charleston Hotel on May 28-29.

MUSC’s Roger White, Pharm.D, the meeting coordinator, and 40 participants plan to discuss the following topics: infection control and antibiotic management efforts in individual hospitals, the impact of antibiotics in animal feeds on resistance, changes in laboratory detection and testing of resistant bacteria, and the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) Get Smart with Antibiotics campaign.

John Powers, M.D., of the FDA, who will deliver the opening speech on Friday evening, will discuss concerns about the lack of development of new antibiotics to combat these problems.

On Saturday, L. Clifford McDonald, M.D., from the CDC will discuss the growing and deadly problem of antibiotic-associated colitis.

Other program faculty will represent both of the state health departments of North and South Carolina, MUSC, Wake Forest University, Duke University, the University of South Carolina, and the VA Medical Center.

The meeeting is sponsored by education grants from the CDC, Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Elan Pharma-ceuticals and Oscient Pharmaceuticals.
