Program helps premature infants benefit from
breast-feeding
Research and clinical experience consistently shows that an early
transition to the breast maximizes successful breast-feeding for
premature infants.
The MUSC NNICU, Special Care, and Level 2 nurseries are implementing an
evidence-based protocol to support that early transition and includes
several skills that approximately 150 staff nurses must learn.
Lactation consultants Barbara Haase and Jeanne Barreira trained the
first group of 12 nurses who volunteered their time and talents to meet
educational and skill levels required by the new protocol. These new
breast-feeding team leaders will work with lactation consultants to
train their peers, exemplifying the importance of the nurse at
the bedside, peer leadership, and improved efficiency in training large
numbers of nurses.
A second team leader program will be held June 17. Contact Barreira at
barreira@musc.edu.
