Weight center to open on Daniel Island

On May 17, the MUSC Weight Management Center will begin offering the FOCUS and First Step weight loss programs at a new satellite office on Daniel Island. The center will staff these programs on Tuesdays at the Carolina Family Care office on Island Park Drive.

“We are delighted to offer our services at this convenient location in a growing area,” said Patrick M. O’Neil, Ph.D., center director. “We look forward to serving the people of Daniel Island, all of the East Cooper area, and the North area from this very accessible office.”

The FOCUS program is a 15-week intensive lifestyle change program designed to induce larger initial weight losses than traditional lifestyle change programs. Patients attend brief weekly individual appointments that rotate among clinic sub-specialties (behavioral, dietitian, and exercise physiology). The early part of the program is primarily supplement-based and provides highly structured dietary intervention. During the latter part of the program, a shift toward more moderate weight loss is made. The program also stresses the importance of an active lifestyle.

First Step is a 20-week program that offers weight loss assistance through individual weekly meetings. It is appropriate for people of all weight ranges. The program helps patients to make changes in eating practices, behaviors, and activity level related to weight control. Individual meal plans and exercise plans are included at the out-set. First Step promotes a gradual yet significant weight loss.
