Communications is topic of talk, workshop

Language and communications expert and best-selling author Phyllis Mindell, Ph.D., will lead a daylong, interactive workshop and a free midday talk for the MUSC community June 17.

Mindell's noon talk for the MUSC community at the Institute of Psychiatry Auditorium is entitled, “Language and Power: What Charlotte (of Charlotte’s Web) Teaches Us.”

Mindell will focus on how women do not need to gain power by looking, acting, or speaking like men. Rather, powerful communications enable them to lead and succeed without compromising their integrity, their femininity or their moral compass.

Mindell was recently appointed an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Medical School where she is developing her work in language and communications with science and medicine.

She has written several books and presented to academic institutions, businesses and professional organizations.

The workshop, entitled “A Woman’s Guide to the Language of Success,” is sponsored by the MUSC Women Scholars Initiative. Because of limited space and availability, workshop registration is closed.

An engaging and provocative speaker and consultant on women’s issues, Mindell will speak on workplace dialect, weakness versus power in language, the language of negotiation and adding efficiency and power to communications, memo writing and other related topics. All workshop participants will receive a copy of her 2001 book, “How to Say It For Women.”

“My work deals only with language and communications,” said Mindell. “Women face other obstacles as well, but I deal only with language.”
