A six-year partnership between MUSC and minority students from state
and national institutions has helped prepare them in chosing the
direction of their futures.
On July 29, the MUSC Summer Institute ended an eight-week academic
program aimed at preparing and orienting college students for
careers in medicine and the health science fields.

The annual program, which began in June, involves MUSC’s Office
of Diversity, Center for Academic Excellence, Writing Center and the
College of Charleston. It is funded by MUSC and the Commission on
Higher Education.
“This is a special program for undergraduate students which is
invaluable in preparing them for careers in the health care
professions,” said Lucille Skaggs, institute coordinator with MUSC
Office of Diversity.
Students maintain a busy academic schedule that begins with science
classes at the College of Charleston and medical professional courses
on MUSC’s campus. Any free time is devoted to independent study or test
preparation.
The 2005 MUSC Summer Institute participants include: Montrell Fields,
College of Charleston; Derrick Huey, College of Charleston; Simon
Brown, Brown University; Maya Fields, USC; Ashley Green, College of
Charleston; Hubert Roland White, Barry University; Kristin Oates, USC;
Michael Fleming, Midlands Tech (Pre-Med); Allycia Floyd, Spelman
College; Adrian Felder, College of Charleston; Marcellina Fugate,

Program instructors were: Juan Varella, Brice Williams, Ginger Culyers,
Andre Eaddy and Robert Shapiro. MUSC coordinators include Skaggs, MUSC
