UMA presents quarterly applause awards

August was award month for winners of the University Medical Associates (UMA) Applause Award for the second quarter of 2005.

Winners were honored by their department, after a surprise on the job by the UMA Prize Patrol. Awards included a gold lapel pin with the MUSC seal, a framed certificate, $50, a half-day of paid time off and a cake to share with co-workers.

Winners were Sherri Gilbert, Department of Neurology; Brenda Thompson, Storm Eye Institute; and Becky Smith, Patient Accounting.
  • From left are Dr. John R. Feussner, Dr. David Bachman, division director of Adult Neurology, Sherri Gilbert, and Bruce Quinlan. Gilbert was nominated by Mark Wagner, Ph.D.  “Sherri went out of her way to get the job done. A report was promised to an attorney and was not transcribed. Sherri spent her weekend producing a report needed at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, and this was not even a part of her job description or her skill set. She went the extra mile and then some,” said Wagner. Gilbert, an administrative specialist, has been employed with MUSC/UMA since 1999.
  • Dr. John R. Feussner, from left, UMA President; Bruce Quinlan, UMA CEO; Brenda Thompson; Dr. Pamela Chavis; and Dr. Edward Wilson, chairman, Department of Ophthalmology. Brenda Thompson is an administrative assistant and was nominated by Pamela Chavis, M.D. “Brenda is an exceptional employee—she is very dedicated to UMA/Storm Eye Institute and its patients. We receive between 20 and 50 calls in the office a day according to the operators, yet she manages to take care of each well and appropriately. Patients have wanted to meet her and thank her for the help she has given. Her attention to detail and follow-through is excellent—any outstanding issue is resolved before the chart leaves the office. She also does my transcription, tracks lab data and other testing, and obtains patient information on all referrals so we can appoint them correctly. She also notifies community physicians if their patients do not come, for which they are very grateful. In short, she provides exceptional service,” said Chavis. Thompson has been a UMA employee since 1974.
  • Honoring Becky Smith with her certificate are Bruce Quinlan, right, George SeBlonka, executive director, Patient Accounting, and director Pat Mahoney. Smith has been a UMA employee since 1973 and was nominated by Cheryl Salvo for her “stick-to-it-iveness” and can-do attitude during the eight months she served as the interim File Maintenance and Billing Supervisor. “Becky was given a most difficult task of standing in when our previous supervisor accepted a promotion. She did not know, nor did she receive, any training, but eagerly and willingly rolled her sleeves up and jumped in,” said Salvo. “Becky has been there for us, and for the file maintenance and billing department, sifting through numerous tasks and always with a can-do attitude. It was tough but she stuck it out, and for her attitude and stick-to-it-iveness she should receive this award...no, a medal.”
