MUSC Faculty Senate meeting minutes
The faculty senate’s meeting minutes for July are approved and posted
on the senate’s Web site at http://www.musc.edu/facsen.
New Business
Committee Updates
- New Faculty Welcome—Peggy Schachte reported on the “New
Faculty Welcome” sponsored by the senate and the Office of the Provost.
The Welcome was held Aug. 8 in the Storm Eye Institute. Schachte
distributed an evaluation form that will be put online. Everyone who
attended will be asked to complete the form. The next New Faculty
Welcome is scheduled for February.
- Governance Committee—Senate Elections. Kelly Ragucci,
Pharm.D., reported that nominations for senators will begin Aug. 23.
Following nominations, the election of senators will take place during
the first part of September.
Constitution and Bylaws
- The senate approved the proposed constitution and bylaws.
These documents will now be voted upon by the entire faculty. Voting
will take place electronically.
Foundation
for Research Development
- Bob Pozner, interim executive director and director of
technology transfer for MUSC Foundation for Research Development,
shared his background relevant to technology transfer, as well as his
goals for the foundation.
Desmond
Associates, Parking Consultants
- Mary Mauldin, Ed.D., senate representative on the parking
committee, reported that Desmond Associates were currently on campus
conducting a needs assessment as part of the process in developing a
long-range plan for parking. Senators were asked to contact Melinda
Anderson, director of parking management, with
suggestions/ideas/questions for the consultants.
Chair’s Report and Discussion of
Issues
- Faculty Convocation—Senators were reminded of Faculty
Convocation on Aug. 23.
- VA/MUSC Collaboration—Schachte reported that the VA is
interested in exploring a potential partnership with MUSC to create a
new collaborative model.
- Office of Research Development Grantsmanship Workshops—The
Grantsmanship workshops are scheduled for Aug. 9, Aug. 10, Oct. 19,
and Dec. 6 from 2 to 5 pm, and Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to noon.
Issues Requiring Senate Response
- Mandatory Pre-employment Drug Screening— Senators were
asked to review this document prior to attending the meeting.
There were no questions about the document as written. (Note:
This policy has been approved and the procedures for this policy are
being determined. Once procedures are determined, the senate will
review the policy).
- Proposed Changes in Pay Cycles, Mandatory Automatic
Deposit—Senators discussed possible impacts with no significant
problems identified. No further discussion required.
- Misconduct in Scientific Research—Document discussed and
senate voted to approve.
Additional Discussion
- Report of Faculty Evaluations of Deans and Department
Chairs—A discussion was held regarding the use and reporting of faculty
evaluations of deans and department chairs. A suggestion was made for
the executive committee to study the issues and open discussions with
the Office of the Provost related to identified needs.
The next senate meeting will be held at 7:45 a.m., Sept. 13, in Gazes
Auditorium. The agenda will be posted on the Faculty Senate’s Web site
prior to the meeting.
