Local events help keep you healthy

No excuses—get out and walk for 30 minutes a day. Consider this your minimum daily requirement for health; it will keep you healthy and can help prevent Type 2 diabetes.
 
Several studies have shown that walking 30 minutes, for five days a week combined with moderate changes in eating can cut in half the risk of diabetes in overweight people with high blood sugar. The participants in these studies also lost an average of 15 pounds in a year. This result makes moderate exercise such as walking the prescription to prevent Type 2 diabetes in the 16 million Americans on the verge of developing diabetes. October is a good month to get started. The weather is getting cooler and there are plenty of walking opportunities:
  • Oct. 1: Run and Walk for the Child. A 10K and 5K Run and Walk Event, race begins at 8 a.m. Register at http://www.iopconnectorrun.com/. Proceeds benefit the local prevention of child abuse and other child-related programs
  • Oct. 2: Buddy Walk at Etiwan Park on Daniel Island. The one-mile walk is being sponsored by the Down Syndrome Association of the Lowcountry as part of National Down Syndrome Awareness Month. A block party featuring jump castles, face-painting, food, games and prizes will be held after the walk. Registration begins at 2 p.m., and the walk begins at 3 p.m. The walk is being held to raise money for local and national education and research and to promote acceptance, awareness and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.   • Oct 8: Walk & Roll Stroll. The stroll benefits the Ronald McDonald House expansion at I’On in Mount Pleasant. The event is sponsored by “Moms in the Know” and Stroller Strides. It will begin with a brisk walk through the neighborhood with Stroller Strides instructors. Exhibitor booths, raffle items and kids’ activities will be on hand. Online registration is encouraged, but onsite registration will be held at 8:30 a.m. for the 9 a.m.-to-noon event. All walkers will meet at the I’On Club, 252 Ponsbury Road.   • Oct 29: Stride & Ride. A 5K walk or roll at James Island County Park to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Registration for the event will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the walk will start at 10 a.m. For information, call Monica Patel 556-3654.
