Ambulatory Care recognizes AREA winners

Each quarter, Ambulatory Care Services recognizes outstanding employees who demonstrate the organization’s values of Accountability, Respect, Excellence, and Adaptability (AREA).

Staff members who received an “Applause for Caring” card or were “applauded” on the Patient Satisfaction Survey during the quarter are automatically eligible for the AREA Award.

Second quarter 2005 AREA Award recipients are: C. Eunice Brown, Pediatric Primary Care; Daniel J. Hu, M.D., Ophthalmology; Nancy L. Lamb, dental assistant, Maxillofacial Prosthodontics; Lillian Webster, clinical analyst, Information Systems.

Eunice Brown, center, was applauded for providing “excellent, careful intake screening of patients.”

Brown was nominated by her clinical care coordinator. She applauded Eunice for providing “excellent, careful intake screening of patients.”  In addition, she takes extra care to ensure that all the medical record information is correct for each patient. “Her careful review of the record at intake helps to ensure quality patient care.”

Dr. Daniel Hu, with plaque, is awarded the AREA award. Hu received the plaque and a cake to share with his coworkers.

Hu was nominated by an employee for stepping in to assist a patient who was being referred to the clinic. There were no immediate appointments available in the system and the patient was concerned because she did not know much about her condition or how serious it was. Hu stepped in and was able to reassure the patient about her concerns as well as making arrangements to have her seen as soon as possible.  “A very frightened young lady walked in, but a reassured patient left. Thank you, Dr. Hu for taking time out of your busy day to stop and help out.”

Nancy Lamb, with plaque, was nominated for the AREA award by a coordinator in her clinic.

Lamb was nominated by the coordinator in her clinic who stated: “Nancy found a patient in the parking garage who was weak and disoriented and could not find her car. She tried to locate the car by description—unsuccessful. She then put the lady in her car and drove her through the parking garage until they located her car.”

Lillian Webster, center, is presented with a plaque. Webster is one of four honored with the AREA award.

Webster was nominated by a physician and employee. Her nominations stated: “Lillian had the unenviable task of training unenthusiastic members of the hematology/oncology department (of which I’m one) to convert to Practice Partner. She did so with skill, patience, and kindness. She went above and beyond when I called her with a problem. Her response was, ‘Hold on, I’ll be right there.’ She walked across campus to my computer to solve the problem. Very impressive. Webster and the ACS Information System’s team successfully completed a significant upgrade to the Practice Partner system this weekend. Unlike most software upgrades, this new version entailed a complete database conversion that took almost four days to complete. This was a very big effort and of great importance, as the Practice Partner system houses the outpatient medical records for almost half of MUSC patients. She expended many hours in preparation for this upgrade over the past few months and then spent much of her Memorial Day weekend at work to help ensure success. She is much appreciated for her hard work, dedication and excellence.”

The Ambulatory Care Prize Patrol surprised each  individual in his/her practice setting. Each recipient received an AREA Award lapel pin, a framed certificate, an AREA Award badge holder, a $50 gift card and a cake to share with coworkers.   these statistics or any other service of the Department of Public Safety, call 792-8614.
