ICD-9-CM
and CPT-4 Coding—5:15 to 6:15 p.m., Sept. 12 in Room 803
Harborview Tower.
This non-credit course is designed to provide an introduction to the
basic principles of ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding. The ICD-9-CM coding
course provides an introduction to the basic principles and guidelines
for assigning diagnostic and inpatient procedure codes. This class will
teach the format and significance of the three volumes of the ICD-9-CM,
demonstrate knowledge of ICD-9-CM convention, apply the principles and
guidelines for ICD-9-coding, and assign the correct diagnosis and
procedure codes with ICD-9-CM. CPT-4 is a coding system used in every
physician's office and ambulatory care setting. This CPT-4 class will
introduce you to the CPT-4 coding book and coding guidelines.
Family
and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)—9 a.m. to noon, Sept. 15 in Room
803 of Harborview Tower.
How do I pay my employees when they are on FMLA leave? Do you have an
employee out of work due to the birth of a baby? Do you have an
employee whose mother or father is in the hospital and wants to be
there with them? Do you have an employee who has had surgery and is out
of work? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you probably
should know more about the Family and Medical Leave Act. You must be a
university employee to attend this seminar as it relates to state
policies and procedures.

Buying Workshop—9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sept. 16, Room 803
Harborview Tower.
The Homeownership Resource Center, in collaboration with MUSC Human
Resources, will be sponsoring a free first time homebuyer workshop. All
potential first time homebuyers are encouraged to attend this workshop.
Topics covered will include how to obtain down payment subsidies up to
$50,000 and how to qualify for interest rates as low as 4 percent
offered only to first time homebuyers. Professionals related to the
purchase of a home such as a realtor, lender, home inspector and
closing attorney will be present as guest speakers to answer all
questions regarding homeownership.
Customer
Service and Telephone Techniques—1 to 4:30 p.m., Sept. 20, Oct.
11 and Nov. 15 in Room 641 Strom Thurmond Building.
This class covers conducting business over the phone, customer service
and handling unhappy customers, making productive and effective
telephone calls, and listening skills. This course will also provide
comprehensive training on telephone etiquette and the MUSC telephone
system.
Violence
in the Workplace—9 to 11 a.m., Oct. 4, Room 803 Harborview Tower.
The objective of this training is to develop and support a work
environment which will prevent and effectively respond to violent
situations in the workplace. In order to increase employee
understanding of work place violence, these areas will be discussed;
defining workplace violence, identifying and recognizing actual and
potential violent situations, response and intervention and follow-up
to a violent situation.

Performance Management Systems Workshop—9 to 11 a.m., Oct. 18,
Room 803 Harborview Tower.
Do you want to know how to properly use the Employee Performance
Management Systems Workshop (EPMS) form? Are you tired of wondering who
to call for information on EPMS? Are you uncertain about how to
complete an accurate and successful evaluation report/session? In this
seminar, you will learn how to use the EPMS to improve work performance
and encourage the growth and development of your employees.
Hiring
the Right Person—9 to 11 a.m., Oct. 27, Room 803 Harborview
Tower.
Selecting the right person for the job is the beginning of a productive
employment relationship. This course provides the hiring official with
essential building blocks for a good hiring decision. The objective of
the course is to provide the hiring official with an overview of legal
responsibilities, a demonstration of the behavioral interview technique
and more.
Cultural
Etiquette: Communication in the Workplace—9 to 11 a.m., Nov. 15,
Room 322 College of Nursing.
Discrimination claims based on the age, race, ethnicity,
disability and sexual harassment are a major concern of MUSC, as well
as the nation. These forms of discrimination can affect students,
staff, as well as faculty and administrators. The Office of Affirmative
Action/EEO is offering training relative to these issues. Participants
attending this workshop will gain an understanding of the laws and how
it applies to MUSC employees and students. This interactive program
also deals with the topics of communication, harassment and cultural
competency in the work place and gives participants the opportunity to
apply knowledge with the relation to hands-on case studies.
