U. Joseph Schoepf, M.D., associate professor in the departments of Radiology and Medicine, was selected as this year’s recipient of the Dr. Jean A. Vezina Award in Innovation and Excellence of the French-Canadian Society of Radiology at a ceremony in Montreal.

The award, accompanied by a $5,000 prize, is intended to recognize a person or an organization who contributed to a significant degree and with excellent results in radiology or in a related field. Awardees are selected by the award committee of the French Canadian Society of Radiology.

“When I heard who the previous and future winners are, I was humbled. For the French Canadian Society of Radiology to choose someone from South Carolina, it was a huge honor,” said Schoepf, a world-renowned cardiac radiologist. “It encourages you to continue on the path you have chosen. I will continue to serve my specialty with all of my strength.”

Born in Austria, Schoepf joined MUSC in 2004, and is considered among the top cardiovascular imaging experts in the world, MUSC officials said.

He serves on the editorial board of Radiology and the Journal of Thoracic Imaging and has given more than 120 lectures internationally. He has authored more than 90 articles in peer review journals, including the American Journal of Radiology, Circulation, and Journal of the American Medical Association and is also a member of 11 scientific societies including the American College of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, American Heart Association, American Roentgen Ray Society and the Society of Thoracic Radiology.
