Library to offer classes on how to
navigate eJournals online
The library has online, full-text access to more than 14,000 unique
eJournal titles; an increase of more than 8,000 titles. The new titles
strengthen MUSC’s core medical, nursing, allied health,
psychology-behavioral sciences and science journal collections.
In addition, the new titles provide access to important subject areas
that are not primarily clinical or science research orientated, but are
important to the University. Such titles include an impressive
collection relating to law, business, ethics, social sciences,
education, language-linguistics, engineering, and computer sciences.
The library is able to offer access to many new and unique titles due
to our consortial agreements with PASCAL and the Carolina Consortium
that has enabled extended access to a number of full text databases and
journals from specific publishers.
Secondly, an electronic resource manager that allows the library to
list all journals from full text databases was installed, as well as
the specific journals that the library subscribes to, in a quick, easy
and updatable manner. In the past, the library added electronic journal
titles to the eJournals at the MUSC Library site and online catalog
one-by-one.
New way
to get journals
The introduction of an electronic resources manager means the
availability of a new way to find out if the library has access to an
eJournal. Although
the system is largely intuitive, the library will be
offering hands-on classes on how to navigate the new eJournals at the
MUSC Library interface.
Those interested can sign up for a eJournals @ MUSC Library class by
either calling 792-2371 or registering online at http://www.library.musc.edu/about_lib/Services/ClassReg.php.
The schedule is: 1 to 2 p.m., April 10; noon to 1 p.m., April 11; 1 to
2 p.m. April 12; noon to 1 p.m., April 13; noon to 1 p.m. April 17; 1
to 2 p.m., April 18; noon to 1 p.m. April 19; and 1 to 2 p.m. April 20.
In the future the electronic resources manager will allow the library
to provide easier subject access to the journal collection. Also, it
will allow you to link from an Ovid MEDLINE, PsycINFO or CINAHL search
citation
directly to the full text of the article.
Popular
magazines too
The library also is able to offer access to an additional 8,000 unique
journal titles, which support the educational, clinical and research
missions of MUSC. Therefore, MUSC Library web users will gain access to
popular magazines, non-medical specialty journals and newspapers
without the library spending an extra
penny.
