Request for proposals to focus on
Neuroscience
In
October 2002, the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the Office of
Women’s Health provided Kathleen T. Brady, M.D., Ph.D., and Carrie
Randall, Ph.D., a five-year award to fund a research center focused on
gender-based multi-disciplinary research at MUSC. One of the goals of
the grant is to catalyze gender-focused research throughout the MUSC
campus. The support of pilot projects is one mechanism to do this.
The purpose of the pilot core is to provide short-term start-up funds
to promising postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty at MUSC to collect
pilot data for an R01 submission. The project must focus on a
neuroscience-related topic and explore either gender differences or
disorders/treatments that are specific to women. The project can be
either clinical or basic science but, consistent with the NIH Roadmap
Initiative and the pending MUSC CTSA application, projects involving
multidisciplinary teams and/or translational research efforts are
encouraged.
Currently salaried postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty are
eligible.
The deadline for receipt of proposals is May 31 with an expected
funding date of July 1. The funding limit is $15,000 with a funding
period of July 1 through June 30, 2007.
Guidelines:
Submit a three-to-five page description of your project using the
following format:
A. Statement of the problem/background
B. Primary hypothesis to be tested
C. Methods to be used
D. Significance of the project and relationship to women's research
--Postdoctoral fellows should also submit a letter of support from the
faculty mentor supervising the project.
--Submit an NIH-type biosketch for the applicant. Postdoctoral fellows
should also submit the mentor's biosketch.
--Submit a budget (using the PHS398 form) and a brief budget
justification. Recall that budgets can be no more than $15,000.
Submit proposals and address inquiries to Angela Waldrop, Ph.D.,
coordinator, Women’s Research Center, 67 President St., Box 250861,
Charleston, S.C., 29425. For information, e-mail waldrop@musc.edu or
