Summer brown bag sessions offered by
Human Resources Management
Free brown bag seminars are offered during the summer months. They are
free one-hour informational sessions on a variety of topics. All
seminars are presented from noon to 1 p.m. and are held in Room 120,
Basic Science Building. Participants are invited to bring a lunch.

21—The Impact of the Growing Hispanic Population on Charleston
According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the Hispanic population grew 211
percent from 1990 to 2000. In this brown bag lunch seminar you can
learn more about the influence of the Hispanic population on the
Charleston area. Language and cultural influences of the Hispanic
community in American society will also be explored.

28—Want to Buy a Home, but don’t have the down payment?
Michaele Russell and Debbie Kidd, Homeownership Resources Center-Family
Services, will give tips of buying your first home. The process can be
time- consuming and very stressful. The session will discuss various
down payment assistance programs, low-interest rate programs and
forgivable grants for the first-time homebuyer. Find out how to enroll
in a First-Time Homebuyer workshop where eligible graduates can
participate in many first time homebuyer mortgage options such as the
S.C. State Housing Program (ex. $4,000 down payment given, home
mortgage loan rate at 4 percent interest). Had a mortgage in the past?
You could still qualify. Credit problems preventing homeownership?
Russell and Kidd will give information on how to overcome this obstacle.

2—Practical Ways to Manage Stress
Mary Beth Brock, occupational therapist at the Institute of Psychiatry,
has taught stress management techniques to patients for more than 20
years. At this seminar, Brock will discuss stress and practical ways to
manage it using the body, the mind and the spirit. It will include
simple ideas that can be used at work, home and even in the car.
