Summer brown bag sessions offered by Human Resources Management

Free brown bag seminars are offered during the summer months. They are free one-hour informational sessions on a variety of topics. All seminars are presented from noon to 1 p.m. and are held in Room 120, Basic Science Building. Participants are invited to bring a lunch.

July 21—The Impact of the Growing Hispanic Population on Charleston
According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the Hispanic population grew 211 percent from 1990 to 2000. In this brown bag lunch seminar you can learn more about the influence of the Hispanic population on the Charleston area. Language and cultural influences of the Hispanic community in American society will also be explored.

July 28—Want to Buy a Home, but don’t have the down payment?
Michaele Russell and Debbie Kidd, Homeownership Resources Center-Family Services, will give tips of buying your first home. The process can be time- consuming and very stressful. The session will discuss various down payment assistance programs, low-interest rate programs and forgivable grants for the first-time homebuyer. Find out how to enroll in a First-Time Homebuyer workshop where eligible graduates can participate in many first time homebuyer mortgage options such as the S.C. State Housing Program (ex. $4,000 down payment given, home mortgage loan rate at 4 percent interest). Had a mortgage in the past? You could still qualify. Credit problems preventing homeownership? Russell and Kidd will give information on how to overcome this obstacle.

Aug. 2—Practical Ways to Manage Stress
Mary Beth Brock, occupational therapist at the Institute of Psychiatry, has taught stress management techniques to patients for more than 20 years. At this seminar, Brock will discuss stress and practical ways to manage it using the body, the mind and the spirit. It will include simple ideas that can be used at work, home and even in the car.

Your feedback is welcomed, as are your suggestions for other Brown Bag Lunch Seminars.
