Hulsey named Robert Wood Johnson
Executive Nurse Fellow
A
national fellowship program focused on helping the country’s health
care system meet new and growing challenges has been awarded to MUSC’s
College of Nursing's (CON) Tara Hulsey, Ph.D., R.N.
Dr. Tara Hulsey
Hulsey is one of 20 nurses nationwide who have executive
leadership roles and was selected as a 2005 Robert Wood Johnson
Executive Nurse Fellow.
Now in its ninth year, the three-year fellowship program is designed to
strategically position nursing across many sectors of the economy in a
health care system that is undergoing unprecedented change and
challenges.
Hulsey has been with MUSC since 1990 and held numerous positions during
her tenure. Her specialty area is high-risk obstetrics, with extensive
clinical experience in high-risk antepartum and intrapartum nursing and
in level I and II newborn nursing. She has taught and advised in the
undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs and is the track
coordinator for the nurse educator master’s program. In addition to
teaching, she conducts research and has published in the areas of
unwanted pregnancy, infant mortality and low birth weight, and maternal
pregnancy behaviors.
“Nurses must play a pivotal role in leading the redesign and success of
health care now and into the future,” said Hulsey. “The Executive Nurse
Fellowship is an intensive opportunity to develop critical leadership
skills, work with a nationally recognized team of coaches and
instructors from within the health care industry, as well as from other
sectors of the economy, and benefit from collaboration with nursing and
health care leaders throughout the country. I am honored and excited to
be selected as a participant.”
As part of the fellowship, Hulsey will have an opportunity to undertake
a leadership project to benefit MUSC with funding support from the
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and matching funds from MUSC. Hulsey’s
project will apply a quality improvement process to traditional health
care education to help maintain pace with today’s dynamic healthcare
profession.
Hulsey also is associate dean for academics and an associate professor
in the CON, associate professor in the College of Medicine, Department
of Pediatrics, and is a full faculty member of the College of Graduate
Studies at MUSC.
She received her bachelor of science in nursing from Clemson
University, her master's in maternal/child nursing from MUSC, and her
doctorate in nursing from the University of South Carolina.
Hulsey is a certified nurse educator, a member of Sigma Theta Tau, and
is the immediate past-president of the Gamma Omicron at-large chapter.
Hulsey has held numerous leadership positions in the area of perinatal
nursing, serving on the board of directors for the South Carolina
Perinatal Association, the Southeast Regional Perinatal Association,
and the National Perinatal Association. Currently, she serves as chair
of the research committee of the National Perinatal Association and is
past chair of the National Perinatal State Forum.
