SGA president welcomes students to
university
by

MUSC
Student Government Association
On behalf of the MUSC Student Government Association (SGA), it is my
honor to welcome you to MUSC and introduce you to the exciting
opportunities we have to offer.
Michael Drake
As a new student you may envision yourself spending virtually all of
your time studying and attending lecture upon lecture, but please let
me assure you that there will be plenty of time available to enjoy both
the City of Charleston and the many activities offered by the SGA.
There is life beyond the library and classroom.
While at MUSC, you will be provided a faculty and administration that
will spend limitless hours enhancing your educational experience. Just
as they are devoted to providing superior academic opportunities to
you, the SGA is devoted to enhancing your student life as well.
SGA will provide you with the opportunity to meet students from all
disciplines at MUSC, spend evenings out in Charleston, and most
importantly, opportunities for a little rest and relaxation. These
opportunities range from cultural experiences in the St. Luke’s Concert
Series, to the Nights Out, Shipwrecked Halloween, Oyster Roast,
Winetasting and our largest event of the year—Alhambra celebration. We
also provide an extensive six-sport intramural program, an
Inter-Professional Competition, and a Student Academic Series.
In addition to all the outside activities, SGA provides both a forum as
well as a unified voice that interacts intimately with the
administration to address student concerns.
The SGA is a 47- member body of elected representatives from all six
colleges and two universitywide student organizations on campus. I
would like to invite and encourage each one of you to take an active
role in your MUSC experience by becoming involved with the SGA, by
expressing your ideas through your class representatives on the SGA, or
by e-mailing sga@musc.edu.
I became involved with the SGA during my first year because I saw many
changes developing at MUSC, from the construction of new hospitals to
the development of new academic programs. I felt that my classmates
should have a strong voice regarding how MUSC will progress into the
future.
It is important that each student’s concern is heard at MUSC, and I
hope each of you will play an important role in helping MUSC continue
to strive toward excellence. I ensure you there is enough time in your
individual schedules to become involved in the SGA.
If you have any questions about getting involved or would like to speak
to me about your new experience at MUSC, e-mail me. As your SGA
president, I look forward to hearing your suggestions and making your
voices heard at the university level.
