HCC renovation nearly complete, praised by preservation society

A wrap-up of the yearlong renovation of the Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) has been sweetened with praise from the area’s top historical preservation group.

HCC received notice that the Preservation Society of Charleston is awarding it the 2006 Carolopolis Award for Charleston properties that are excellent examples of sensitive exterior preservation, restoration, rehabilitation or new construction.

The award is being presented Feb. 1 at the Riviera Conference Center.

HCC staff has begun transitioning into all the renovations, including Ernest Hollings, the long-time U.S. senator for whom the facility is named. Hollings maintains an office in the building.

Among the newly renovated areas is the new chemotherapy infusion suite, which is double the current capacity of 20 to 40 chemotherapy chairs. HCC also has a new pharmacy and a clinical laboratory. The first floor was renovated to include an expanded retail center and café, which will open this spring; radiation oncology, and patient resource room.

Meanwhile, the main hospital is moving all mammography services from Rutledge Tower to HCC.

Renovation of part of the third floor HCC will begin early in 2007, and the fourth floor of the older building still is being renovated.
