Children's Hospital sponsors January page, artist

First lady Jenny Sanford, honorary chair of Safe Kids South Carolina, unveiled the 2007 Kids Safety Calendar during a Dec. 4 luncheon at the South Carolina Hospital Association. Sanford addressed parents, students, teachers and community members, and stressed the importance of education and community awareness in preventing childhood injury.

MUSC Children’s Hospital sponsored the January page and its artist, Destiny Carter, a Rivelon Elementary student from Orangeburg. Her work offers tips preventing scald burn injuries to children. MUSC Children’s Hospital is the lead organization for Safe Kids Trident Area, and is the only children’s hospital in South Carolina which offers specialized care for pediatric burn injuries.

The 2007 safety calendar features artwork selected from more than 21,000 entries from elementary school students from across the state. Thirteen children were selected as winners of the calendar artwork contest that was conducted in elementary schools in each of the state’s 46 counties.

Designed to promote childhood injury prevention, the contest was spearheaded by the governor’s office and Safe Kids South Carolina. Each month of the calendar targets a different injury risk area and features colorful artwork and important safety tips. Each artist received a certificate of participation from the governor, an award from Safe Kids South Carolina, and a $100 gift card from Wal-Mart.

Safe Kids Trident Area is led by MUSC Children’s Hospital and is dedicated to preventing unintentional injury to children in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties. For information on Safe Kids Trident Area, visit http://www.musckids.com/about/dept_prog/safe_kids.htm.
