Now that it’s a new year, we can expect that atop everyone’s list of resolutions is the ever-popular goal to lose weight and get in shape. Fortunately MUSC’s Harper Student Wellness Center is offering just the program for those looking to stick to their resolution this year.

TeamFit is a new eight-week program consisting of fitness instruction, fitness testing, nutrition counseling, educational sessions and stress management. Designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for personalized results and behavioral changes, the TeamFit staff includes a registered dietitian and certified fitness trainers. Guest lecturers include physical therapists, an exercise physiologist and the MUSC director of Sports Medicine.

“The TeamFit staff is dedicated to helping participants not only be successful during the program, but also adhere to their commitment at the end of the eight weeks,” said Janis Newton, director, Aerobics Programs. “They will tailor the program content to the needs of each individual.”

Participants will team up with a partner, or be assigned a partner, with whom they will accumulate points for workout sessions, attendance of educational sessions and other activities. Team winners will receive special prizes at the end of the eight weeks.

“TeamFit is the perfect combination of fitness and nutrition education, along with personal guidance. The team approach and the point system add fun, competition and rewards. This is the first time a program this comprehensive has ever been offered. The program has been designed to overcome all of the obstacles that are typically responsible for people failing previous attempts to get fit,” Newton said.

Pre-testing will take place Jan. 22 - 26 by appointment, and sessions will last from Jan. 29 through March 23. Program fees cover the T-shirt, educational events, orientation, nutrition and exercise training; costs are: $25 for members, $150 for nonmembers, and free for MUSC students ($5 for the shirt).

The educational seminars will take place between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Thursdays. Topics covered will include:
  • Healthy Eating Hot Topic: Weight Loss Tips-Optimal Eating for More Muscle, Less Fat—Judith Herrin, registered dietitian;
  • Injury Prevention in Cardiovascular Fitness and Strength Training—David Geier, M.D., director, MUSC Sports Medicine;
  • Calorie Burning: Facts & Myths, How to Burn Calories Effectively—Jim Tomsic, Exercise Physiologist;
