Parking Office aims to please
commuters
Now
that the holidays are gone, the new year brings good news from the
MUSC Office of Parking Management, for those who use the MUSC transit
system, with the completion of an additional bus shelter and the
promise of two more.
As employee and student traffic has increased in the Hagood and
surrounding parking lots during the last couple of years, Melinda
Anderson, parking management director, and her staff responded to
employee requests for more facilities to shelter those waiting for
buses during the morning and afternoon rush to work.
“With the help of Engineering and Facilities design and project
management staff, we’ve added an additional shelter to the parking lot
located on Lockwood. Two more [shelters] should be completed in the
coming weeks, one at the Hagood Annex on Line Street and the other in
the main Hagood lot,” Anderson said. “We are always looking for ways to
improve the parking experience at MUSC, and this was one way we could
make things better for our students and employees by upgrading the
system.”

One of the largest concerns morning commuters voiced in the past was
the lack of shelter during inclement weather for those waiting for the
bus during high traffic times. Of course, no one likes to be left in
the rain, cold or heat, so Anderson and her team worked diligently to
construct the shelter at the Lockwood lot and ink the deal with the
City of Charleston for the shelters on the other two lots.
“There just wasn’t enough room during peak arrival times, so these
shelters will all be bigger and able to accommodate more commuters,”
Anderson said.
In addition, a renovation of the D-lot at 159 Rutledge Ave. was
completed during the holiday break. The lot was redesigned for greater
convenience and efficiency, lighting was added, and a fenced area was
created at the rear of the lot to shield the waste receptacle from
view. “It has made such a difference for employees assigned to this
area, and has improved the appearance of the MUSC campus. Again, this
project was accomplished with the expert help from the Engineering and
Facilities design and project management team,” Anderson said.
