Final registration for weight loss
program is Jan. 10
For
information on the Lose to Win program, visit the Wellness Wednesday
booth from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 10 in the Children’s Hospital lobby.
It's that time of year again. Time to put away last year's added
Christmas pounds and start making New Year's resolutions.
Losing weight and increasing exercise are at the top of America's most
common resolutions. However, they are a lot harder to keep than those
extra Christmas pounds.
Statistics show that 75 percent of resolutions are kept past the first
week and only 46 percent are kept after six months.
Here are some ways to help weight loss and fitness resolutions last:
- Create a game plan and set goals.
- Ask friends and family members for help and accountability.
- Find a reward unrelated to food, such as a professional
massage, when certain goals have been met.
- Limit the number of promises to avoid being spread too thin.
- Seek professional assistance with a trainer or dietitian or
join a weight loss program. Research has proven that help from a
professional greatly improves people's success rate.
Luckily, MUSC has a program designed specifically for those wanting to
shed extra pounds and make healthy lifestyle changes.
Lose to Win is MUSC's six-week weight loss and healthy lifestyle
program. This program is open to MUSC employees, students, volunteers,
and friends 18 and older. It is a great way to lose weight, learn about
healthy habits and win prizes.
The program runs from Jan. 11 through Feb. 22. Classes are taught from
11:30 a.m. to noon each Thursday and then again from 12:15 to 12:45
p.m. They range in topics from exercise to dining out.
Participants will be given a weekly newsletter with delicious recipes
and helpful nutrition tips and a registration packet full of freebies
and coupons.
Door prizes at each class will include gift certificates to Hymen's
Seafood, Gold's Gym, Town and Country, West Ashley Aerobics Center, AMF
bowling, and Charleston Cooks. The participant with the best class
attendance and most weight lost will receive $150.
Pre-registration will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 10 in
front of the MUSC gift shop. The cost for the program is $15 if you
pre-register and $20 if you pay at the first class Jan. 11.
