Griffin memorial walk slated for Jan.
13
Eleven
years ago, the community was rocked by the tragic and unexpected death
of Laura Griffin, an MUSC graduate student and the director of College
of Charleston's Office of Substance Abuse Prevention.
While jogging on the Battery, she was struck by a hit-and-run driver
and died five days later. The driver of the vehicle was under the
influence, the very cause Laura was fighting against.
As a legacy to Laura Griffin's work in the Charleston community and
across the state, the Laura Griffin Memorial 5K Run/Walk was initiated.
The proceeds raised from the run/walk will fund student scholarships
and a fellowship in her name and commemorate her life's work in
substance abuse prevention.
The run/walk is USATF-certified and will start at the College of
Charleston and wind through the historic streets downtown. The
application can be mailed to the College of Charleston, along
with the application fee.
Sponsors of the event arePiggly Wiggly, College of Charleston, 96 Wave,
WAVE, Aramark, JJ Shirtworks, Kassis Shoes and Colucci Jewelers.
For information on the memorial run, call 953-8248 or visit
its Web site at http://www.cofc.edu/LauraGriffinRun.
