Scouts learn about good oral health
Members
of Boy Scout Troop 417 (North Charleston) got a close-up
introduction to dentistry and orientation about values of good oral
health care during a Sept. 4 visit to MUSC’s College of Dental Medicine
(CDM).
The scouts were completing their dentistry merit badge and were invited
to spend time in CDM’s new Aisic and Riva Hirsch Dental Simulation Lab
in the Basic Science Building.
To earn their badges, the scouts were required to complete several
require-ments, which included learning and detecting tooth decay on a
radiograph; identifying various dental instruments; preparing a dental
stone cast from impressions; as well as the benefits of practicing good
oral hygiene.
Troop scoutmaster Scott Chamber and Justin Ward, a second-year dental
student and assistant scoutmaster, helped the scouts earn their merit
badges. Participants included Andy Cammack, Josh Chamber, Matthew
Burandt, R.L. Evans, Gabe Reyna and Ammon Reyna.
