Senate meeting minutes for November
The faculty
senate September minutes were approved. Visit http://www.musc.edu/facsen/.
Guest speaker
- Trident United Way—David Nicole spoke about a new program
that Trident United Way started. Wings for Kids is an after-school
program that is community based. Trident United Way utilizes resources
from Big Brother/Big Sister and the Food Bank. The goal is to combine
local non-profit organizations to provide mentorship and nutrition help
to children. This after-school program is designed to help improve
students’ overall education and ensure they graduate. So far 92 percent
of students have improved their grades and moved on to the next class
grade. Nicole also expressed appreciation to MUSC faculty for
supporting Trident United Way.
- Diana Vincent, chair of the faculty intellectual property
committee—Currently revising the current Intellectual Property (IP)
Policy (in 95 percnt agreement). The current policy can be found at http://www.musc.edu/facsen/handbook/handbook.pdf.
The policy defines intellectual property, addresses procedures, and
offers incentives. The current unresolved issue is what to do with lab
money when the principal investigator goes to a not-for-profit company
or another university. Does the money follow the creator or does it
stay at MUSC? Possible resolutions include: 1) the funding follows the
creator, 2) the funding stays at MUSC, or 3) a combination of one and
two (half of the funding goes and half stays).
- Stephen Lanier, Ph.D., associate provost for
research—Lanier spoke about IP policies and procedures. He expressed a
need for an updated policy in part because there has been a dramatic
increase in entrepreneurial activity. He has been in contact with a
number of different universities and colleges (both public and private)
to see what their policies are on lab share following the creator when
an individual leaves. No other university Lanier investigated allows
the lab share of a grant to follow the faculty member. In support of
MUSC retaining this lab share, he made the point that allowing this
money to leave basically subsidizes growth at other universities.
Comments should be directed to Vincent (vincentd@musc.edu) or Lanier
(lanier@musc.edu).
New business
- Walter Limehouse, M.D., faculty senate president— Limehouse
will compile proposed changes to the IP policy for the faculty senate
to consider. A vote will occur at the December meeting. Questions and
comments can be directed to college faculty senate representatives.
- The next meeting will be held at 7:45 a.m., Tuesday,
Dec.11,
Room 125, Gazes Auditorium.
