Meet...Steve
Name: Stephen (Steve) Schaer,
R.N.
Department:
Pediatrics 7A, Children’s Hospital.
Military branch of service and rank: U.S.
Army, colonel (Retired).
Family: Wife, Sheree; daughter,
Kristen; son, Matthew; and Barnaby, our 115 lb. Chocolate lab.
First car: 1968 VW Superbeetle.
Fondest childhood memory: Learning
carpentry and woodworking skills from my grandfather, who was a master
woodworker.
Favorite local place to eat:
Capricios in Mount Pleasant.
What inspired you to work in nursing:
I had once thought of going to medical school, but got diverted by a
co-ed college and fraternity parties, followed by a career in the Army.
When I retired from the Army, I decided to go to nursing school at MUSC
to pursue my interest in the medical field. I have long wanted to work
in a career field where caring for people is paramount. Nursing offers
the opportunity to work and volunteer in a broad arena.
What is you biggest challenge at work:
Dealing with children who are victims of abuse and neglect.
The best compliment you have received:
My wife told me she is incredibly proud of me for finishing nursing
school at my advanced age!
Something I have tried once but will
never do again: Earning my airborne wings at the age of 40 and
jumping out of military planes.
Three things you are
grateful for: A loving
God, wife and family.
