Service honors loved ones
Families and
staff from the Children’s Hospital gathered for the annual Service of
Remembrance Nov. 2, at St. Luke’s Chapel to honor the lives of
children. This family-centered service gave parents, friends and staff
a chance to hear soothing music and words of comfort as well as light a
candle in honor and memory of their children. This year the service was
attended by more than 80 people, including eight families, 10 staff
volunteers and seven volunteers from Children’s Hospital.
Pediatric
Hematology/Oncology (7B) registered nurse Sissy Kerr lights a candle,
with assistance from Child Life specialists Christine Marcoux and
Morgan Ford, in memory of one of their patients.
“The service gives staff an opportunity to set aside an hour to reflect
upon the care and compassion given to children and families, who have
suffered through a child’s life-taking illness,” said Chaplain George
Rossi, Pastoral Care.
Allan Rish with
wife, Becky and daughter, Madison, light a candle in memory of son and
brother, Jamie. Jamie was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome
Sept. 22, 2000, and passed away Oct. 12, 2003, after complications from
his third surgery. “Thank you and your team for all you do to keep the
memories of our precious ones alive,” said Becky.
In addition, MUSC staff spent time with families at the reception that
followed to talk about mementos and the memories that parents continue
to treasure about their children. As the service motto says, these are
children who are “always loved and never forgotten.”
