F&A announces
Employees of the Month
The University’s Finance & Administration (F&A) division
celebrated October’s Employee of the Month at its monthly event Oct.
17.
The Employee of the Month was selected by the Rewards & Recognition
Committee (RRC) from a list of all F&A Applause Award nominations
for October.
Each month, F&A honors employees from the Engineering &
Facilities, Finance, and Operations departments who were nominated for
Applause awards for their commitment to excellent service.
Employee
of the Month for October
Gene Singletary, Grants &
Contracts Accounting
Singletary was selected for his recommendation to improve the process
of incoming invoices associated with subcontracts held by outside
organizations. His nomination read: “Gene commented that sometimes the
invoices came directly to him, some were being sent to Office of
Research and Sponsored Programs, and some went to Grants &
Contracts Accounting. Gene volunteered to be the point person for
incoming invoices, and he would send the invoices to his coworker
electronically to be processed. His co-worker would return them to him
for approval and payment. Gene has done this twice, and having them
sent electronically has proven to be a huge timesaver, plus the
e-mail acts as the coworker's to-do list. Because of Gene’s
recommendation, the invoice process is much timelier than in the past
and they are off the coworker's desk in no time. It was a simple
process change that has made the coworker more organized and efficient.
Gene’s process is going to be recommended to all of their departments
to assist them in expediting their subcontract payments.”
The RRC did not select an Employee of the Month for the Operations or
Engineering & Facilities divisions for October.
The nominations the committee received did not meet the Applause
criteria and consequently were not considered in the Employee of the
Month selection process. Nominations received by the RRC which do not
meet the Applause criteria would normally be turned into a PEER
Postcard and presented to the employee in lieu of Applause. However, in
cases when an Applause nomination is submitted between a supervisor and
subordinate and the nomination does not meet the Applause criteria, the
employee will not be recognized by the RRC committee.
The PEER Postcard Program restricts staff members in the same
department from giving a card to their direct supervisor, and restricts
supervisors from giving a PEER card to their direct reports. Therefore,
postcards will not be generated from Applause nominations between
employees and/or supervisors. Fundamentally it’s not the RRC’s
intention to change the process of how Applause nominations are
submitted; however, supervisors submitting an Applause for their
employee should make sure the nomination meets with the Applause Award
criteria. If an Applause nomination does not meet the established
criteria it will not be considered for an Applause Award or a PEER
Postcard.
While postcards should not be submitted between supervisors and staff
members that have a direct supervisor/employee relationship, staff in
manager roles can present a card to any F&A employee outside their
reporting area. Conversely, an employee in F&A can present a card
to a manager as long as the individual is not his/her direct
supervisor. For example a staff member from the finance department can
give a supervisor in the operations department a PEER Postcard.
The next Employee of the Month event will be held Dec. 19.
