Griffin memorial walk slated for Jan.
19
Twelve
years ago the community was rocked by the tragic and unexpected death
of Laura Griffin, an MUSC graduate student and the director of College
of Charleston's Office of Substance Abuse Prevention.
While jogging on the Battery, she was struck by a hit and run driver
and died five days later. Ironically, the driver of the vehicle was
under the influence, the very cause Griffin was fighting against.
As a legacy to Griffin's work in the Charleston community and across
the state, the Laura Griffin Memorial 5K Run/Walk was initiated.
The proceeds raised from the run/walk will fund student scholarships
and a fellowship in her name and commemorate her life's work in
substance abuse prevention.
The run/walk is USATF certified and will start at the College of
Charleston and wind through the historic streets of downtown. The
application can be cut out and mailed to the College of Charleston,
along with the application fee.
For information on the memorial run, call Deb Miller
953-5558 or visit http://www.cofc.edu/LauraGriffinRun.
The registration form can also be found online at http://www.active.com.
