The Division of Finance & Administration (F&A) sponsored its
sixth Leadership Development Institute (LDI) Nov. 16 at the Charleston
Marriott Hotel as part of the division’s continuing journey with MUSC
Excellence.

strategies for a peer interviewing activity.
The Vegas-themed daylong retreat gathered 63 managers and supervisors
from the F&A division to review their pillar goal progress and
celebrate the success of the 2006-2007 service teams. The meeting also
focused on helping participants develop peer interviewing skills, which
is a key component of the must haves of hardwiring excellence.
F&A LDI team leader, Julie Ham welcomed attendees and introduced
Claire Hoefer, Office of Career Development program coordinator, who
served as master of ceremonies for the day. David McNair of the McNair
Group, a management development and customer service consulting firm,
facilitated the training and contributed to the program’s
energetic atmosphere.
Highlights included a review of the division’s pillar goal progress by
Lisa Montgomery, F&A vice president. She also shared several wins
celebrating outstanding performance in F&A. Employees from
Engineering & Facilities, Parking Management, Public Safety, and
Risk Management were all recognized for their dedication to MUSC
Excellence.
A review of the October Spotlight on Excellence employee feedback
surveys, completed by more than 400 F&A division staff, confirmed
that more than 81 percent of F&A employees believe that MUSC
Excellence is making a positive difference.
Participants reviewed leadership and employee progress with other key
Excellence tools including reward and recognition, sharing wins,
employee/customer rounding, communication boards, staff meetings and
pulse surveys. The benefits of good communication using rounding, key
words, AIDET (acknowledge, introduce, duration, explanation and thank
you), lifting up and follow-up calls to customers were also recapped.
The LDI attendees were joined by the rest of the F&A Excellence
service team members for a luncheon celebrating their contribution to
the program during the past year. Keynote speaker John Raymond, M.D.,
vice president for academic affairs and provost, praised employees for
their progress with MUSC Excellence.
“Each of you has demonstrated success by meeting and embracing the
division’s MUSC Excellence goals,” said Raymond. “You are the everyday
role models and examples of success for fellow employees working in
university departments, divisions and colleges.”
The next Division of F&A LDI is scheduled March 28.
