Women's History Month celebrated with
events

In the new millennium, women are thriving in education, at home and in
the work place. Many of the struggles and hardships illuminated in the
United States during various women’s movements throughout history are
forever stowed in the past. While much has been achieved and women have
progressed, the National Women’s History Project (NWHP) reminds all
that, despite coming so far, the journey forward must continue.
Each year, MUSC and its community celebrate Women’s History Month
during March, adopting the NWHP’s theme for activities and discussion
on where women have been, where they are, and where they are going.
This year’s theme, “Generations of Women Moving History Forward,” will
serve as the basis from which the following events will take place.
A wine and cheese reception from 5 to 7 p.m. March 1 at the Harper
Student Center will mark the beginning of MUSC’s tribute to
women’s history. Professional female artists from the Charleston
community have been invited to display their work in the MUSC Courtenay
Gallery. All are invited to attend the reception, and contact
information for the artists’ home galleries will be available.
On March 22, a panel of women community leaders from various
professions will present during a panel discussion at noon, Room 100,
Basic Science Building. These women represent the justice system,
community outreach efforts, local media, medical alumni, The MUSC
Center for Women and many other prominent organizations. Panel
presenters include: Sister Marie Amelia Ferillo, Our Lady of Mercy
Outreach; Rita Scott, WCSC TV general manager; Magistrate Linda
Lombard, Charleston County Bonds Court; Delores Gibbs, M.D., family
practitioner, and College of Medicine alumni; and Linda Ketner, We Are
Family and former AFFA executive director. For more information about
the panel presentation, contact Laurie Charles at 792-0817.
Throughout the month, The Catalyst will print a series of articles
highlighting accomplished women at MUSC, as well as their experiences
as professional women and their advice for the women coming behind them.
