Library director selected as 2008 Doe
lecturer
Thomas
Basler, Ph.D., was selected as the 2008 Janet Doe Lecturer by
the Medical Library Association. As director and professor for the
libraries and learning resource centers, Basler was chosen based upon
his unique perspective on the history and philosophy of medical
librarianship. Basler will present his lecture at the association's
annual meeting, a transcript of which will later be published in the
Journal of the Medical Library Association.
At MUSC since 1991, Basler is responsible for education, research,
patient care and service programs throughout the state and regional
area. Established in 1840, the MUSC Library contains 220,000 volumes
and receives more than 14,000 current periodical titles annually. With
a budget of $4 million dollars and a staff of approximately 55
full-time, including 14 faculty, Basler helps to serve MUSC's 2,500
students and 3,000 faculty and staff. He was named Fellow of the
Medical Library Association in May 2004, for sustained and outstanding
contributions to health sciences librarianship.
“It's been a joy to be able to participate in the Medical Library
Association for all these years,” Basler said. “I encourage the staff
to participate whenever they can. Some of the people who have worked
with me over the years contacted me when they learned I had been
selected for the Doe Lectureship. They get some pleasure to see my
honor, but they know I think of it as a group thing. It's nice, because
I've learned a lot from them.”
The Janet Doe Lectureship was established in 1966 by an anonymous
donation to support a lecture in honor of Janet Doe (1895-1985) former
librarian of the New York Academy of Medicine, historical scholar, past
president of the association, and editor of the first two editions of
handbook of the Medical Library Practice.
