Lose to Win participants shed
unwanted pounds
The
dietetic internship and clinical nutrition department want to thank the
employees who participated in the Lose to Win program this year.
Eighty-one participants signed up, of which 36 completed the six-week
program. Participants who completed the program lost an average of
almost 4 pounds, which was enough to reach both clinical and
statistical significance during this time frame. Furthermore, both body
mass index (BMI) and percent body fat dropped by 0.6 points and 0.4
percent, respectively.
During the program, each participant accrued points based on the amount
of weight lost and number of classes attended. Each participant also
was asked to complete an exit survey, but because it was kept
anonymous, no points could be given to those who completed it. Those
with the highest number of points won a cash prize of $150 (grand
prize), $75, $50, or one of three $25 runner-up awards.
MUSC President Raymond Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D., congratulated both the
dietetic interns for hosting the event, as well as the top “losers” who
participated in this annual event.
Ted McGill, DMD, a dentist and faculty member of the College of
Dentistry, won the grand prize of $150 for losing 17.2 pounds.
Bonnie Shaw won the second place prize for losing 14.4 pounds. Though
not employed by MUSC (but non-employees could enter), Shaw is a retired
teacher and guidance counselor residing on Johns Island.
The third place prize was awarded to Sarah Ferguson, the coordinator of
the Annual Fund Phone-a-thon, Office of Development. Ferguson lost 13.5
pounds.
Three runners-up each won $25. They were: Adrian Nida, the
bioinformatics manager from the General Clinical Research Center, who
lost 12 pounds; Theresa White, a procurement specialist II from the
Department of Central Supply Purchasing who lost 8.4 pounds; and
Victoria Singleton (information not available) who lost 8.4 pounds.
