March of Dimes awards grant to CON
The
South Carolina Chapter of The March of Dimes has awarded a $27,853
grant to the MUSC College of Nursing.
This grant will enable the College of Nursing to enroll 50 high-risk
pregnant women to participate in the Centering Pregnancy for
Prematurity Prevention (CPPP) program. The CPPP model is an innovative
group approach to prenatal care that emphasizes the importance of
breastfeeding, nutrition and physical activity through education and
support services.
The CPPP program is based on the Centering Pregnancy model developed by
Sharon Rising that aims to improve the quality of the prenatal care
experience by empowering high-risk pregnant women through a group-based
approach.
“This will be the first funded Centering Pregnancy program in the
state, and it is a collaborative effort between the MUSC Colleges
of Nursing and Medicine,” said Tara Hulsey, Ph.D., associate dean for
academics of the College of Nursing and project director.
Last year, the South Carolina March of Dimes invested more than $4.2
million in program services, including research grants and local
community services.
Through these grants, the March of Dimes is seeking ways to prevent
birth defects and infant death, reduce South Carolina’s increasing
premature birth rate, increase access to prenatal care and educate men
and women about having healthy babies.
